Culturally Diverse Literature

We believe every student, regardless of their circumstances or starting point, deserves the opportunity to SHINE in the classroom—to develop the confidence to embrace academic challenges and discover the joy of learning.

The reality is that every summer, students risk the “summer slide,” with studies showing potential losses of two to three months of hard-earned progress in reading and math.

For students who are already struggling with unfinished learning, this loss hits even harder. What if summer wasn’t about losing ground but gaining it? What if your students find their SHINE instead?

Culturally Diverse Literature

With 20 days of dedicated summer literacy and math instruction, RISE Summer Learning Program addresses unfinished learning head-on.

Add-On Coaching Services

On-site coaching provides customized professional development for your school or district.

coaching
How does it work?

A dedicated coach from Lavinia Group will work with your school leaders to create a coaching agenda that aligns with your summer learning goals and priorities.

The coach will also help you implement accelerated learning strategies for math and ELA, specifically designed to target unfinished learning from the previous year and close critical achievement gaps.

Coaching services will include:

  • Three or four half-day, on-site visits
  • Email and phone access to the coach for ongoing support.

While on-site, coaches will:

  • Model lessons to demonstrate best practices and effective teaching strategies for the RISE curriculum
  • Provide individualized feedback and guidance to teachers
  • Conduct classroom observations alongside school leaders
  • Assist in analyzing student data
  • Help teachers differentiate lesson plans based on student data.

We initially tested the on-site coaching program with a small group of schools. The schools in this pilot program that used the coaching service saw greater score increases in both ELA and math than those that did not.

  • Schools using the coaching program had a 17% score growth in ELA and 16% score growth in math.
  • In comparison, schools that did not participate in the coaching program had a 14% score growth in ELA and a 13% score growth in math.

FAQ

What do you recommend for students who are significantly below grade level?

We recommend small group, individualized instruction for students who are significantly behind grade level. Our phonics curriculum can be used flexibly across any grade level to support developing readers. Additionally, our Math Routines curriculum can be adapted for small group instruction to support mathematical reasoning, build number sense, and address content gaps.

Each assessment is designed to take 30-45 minutes and includes both multiple-choice and open-response questions (except for Rising Grades 1-3 ELA, which is only open-response).

RISE will provide scoring guides, rubrics, and virtual professional development on administering and scoring assessments. Assessment data will be available immediately for school leaders to analyze and for teachers to adjust their summer instruction accordingly.

We recommend that assessments be administered digitally, but they can also be administered via pen and paper if necessary. Any assessments administered via pen and paper will need to be entered into the assessment platform afterward.

The pre- and post- assessments are not intended to be comprehensive evaluations of students’ overall academic abilities. Instead, they focus on a subset of grade-level standards that align with the specific skills and concepts taught in the RISE curriculum.

The curriculum aligns with Common Core State Standards and state-specific standards.

However, the curriculum does not cover all possible standards within a grade level. Instead, it focuses on a smaller set of “power standards”—essential skills and concepts for each grade level.

RISE aims to bridge learning gaps and prepare students for the upcoming grade level. To accomplish this, the curriculum focuses on standards from the previous grade level. For example, students entering 1st grade (Rising 1st) in the fall would work on those kindergarten “power standards.” This approach seeks to solidify foundational knowledge before moving on to new grade-level content.

We do not provide a dedicated curriculum for summer school enrichment.
However, we have partnered with a research-based, free-to-use platform that provides daily activities to build classroom relationships. If you partner with an additional enrichment company this summer, we recommend that they have clear lesson plans with sequenced activities to ensure all students are engaged during instructional time.

You will receive access to the curriculum as downloadable PDFs by grade level through the RISE Summer Learning Program platform.

The materials are labeled based on the grade students will enter in the fall of 2025 (e.g., students entering 3rd grade in the fall will use materials labeled “Rising 3rd Grade”).

Schools can print and organize these materials by day, week, or in one batch for the summer session.
